One of only 14 breeds that the AKC recognizes as ancient, Lhasa Apsos originally came from the mountains of Tibet where they were the sentinels and companions of the monks. Averaging 11 - 12 inches tall and 12 - 15 pounds, they are very hardy & surprisingly sturdy for their size. Long lived (greater than 12 years is common), low shedding, and infrequently barking they make wonderful pets in a variety of home settings. They are very adaptable in there need for moderate exercise and generally do well amusing themselves while the family is away during the day. While very intelligent, they do not respond well to harsh discipline and must be well socialized to overcome a natural born aloofness. Training sessions are best kept short and not repetitive or your lhasa will become bored ! They learn quickly, but seem to enjoy occasionally surprising their owner by "forgetting" things they've been taught -- they can be a bit mischievous! Many people describe lhasas as having almost people like personalities; with different dogs being very individual and facial expressions that are truly amazing in their depth and ability to communicate their moods. Most breeders recommend some caution with young children and lhasas, good socialization and close supervision is a must ! These are very hardy little dogs with few prominent health problems. Cataracts, urinary tract stones, obesity, scrambled or missing teeth, or"loose" kneecaps can be a problem especially in poorly bred or aging lhasas.
